Office Furniture – two small words that encompass such an enormous field. First, there is the specific category of the furniture. More or less, a definition of “what’s it’s for”. This a long list in itself. It includes: General Purpose Desks, Computer Desks, Genera Purpose Tables, Boardroom and Conference Room Tables, Bookshelves, General Purpose Shelves, Filing Cabinets, Chairs, Stands and Carts

They’re the basic types by “purpose”. Then they are nearly all repeated by whether a business wants Contemporary furniture, or Antique. In Antique there is “real” antique furniture as well as Reproduction antique furniture. In the context of Contemporary Furniture these is stand- alone or Modular. The latter includes partitions and interlinked pieces for open-plan office.

In Contemporary furniture, the chair is probably the most widely used. And chairs can be as simple and utilitarian as a one piece plastic moulded unit for use in areas like canteens, workshops and locations prone to dirt or grease. It is not something that is chosen for its appearance or style.

For areas not prone to grease and dirt, there are basic padded chairs that are upholstered and there are basic swivel chairs. These are general office chairs and are usually behind a desk. They could be used by secretaries and typists. For the executive there a big range from simple practical, comfortable swivel chairs to utterly luxurious sumptuous leather specimens that nobody would ever want to leave voluntarily.

If you asked someone to describe an office chair without thinking too deeply about it, they would more than likely describe one that is behind a desk. Yet there are other types of chair commonly used in offices too. In most receptions areas there is a group of low chairs usually nested around a coffee table. These are comfortable and ideal for sitting back in and reading some periodicals usually found on these tables, while waiting to meet a staff member.

In the realm of desks there’s everything from the most basic steel item found in areas like car repair shops to and industrial storeroom. Their main function apart from the obvious is to be easy to clean. At the other end of the scale, there are the most sumptuous executive desks for the top managers who perhaps feel they deserve a little pampering.

So the picture that we’re building up is that the furniture must be appropriate to the use and importance of the user. That’s why the most impressive and expensive tables are to be found in boardrooms. It makes sense really. That’s where all the top brass of the organisation sit, when they’re making vital corporate decisions. It’s also where their most valued clients are occasionally deemed worthy to be invited. For that reason the furnishing is there to impress those clients and equally to let them know just how important the boardroom’s permanent occupants really are.

So apart from the long list of furniture available in the category of “Contemporary” or “Modern”, the entire range is also manufactured in Reproduction styling to. Reproduction furnishing is usually chosen to add an appropriate air of timeless excellence, proud heritage and historical continuity to the organisation. You might find such furniture is the public offices of a large long-established Law firm, or a top wine importer.

Related to Reproduction furniture, there is the rare genre of authentic antique furniture. It’s rare for three main reasons. Firstly, good antique furniture is very expensive. Secondly, it has a small range, since many application for which we use furniture in the office nowadays, simply did not exist in, say, Victorian times. And even where there is an antique version of a modern piece of furniture the older one is usually not available in as big a selection of sizes and variations. There are antique versions available of desks, tables, filing cabinets and chairs. Some are of the most elaborate design and made from the most exotic woods. But usually you need a fat wallet even to consider them.
